| According to the reports, tens of thousands of people fleeing the fighting and looting, and heading towards the Kyrgyz border with Uzbekistan, The electricity and gas have been cut off, meaning there are also no water supplies. Shops and markets are closed, leading to fears of a lack of food, especially in the hospitals and places of detention and reports issued by Ministry of Health, more than 100 people have died and around 900 have been wounded in the clashes, which started on Thursday. An estimated 430 people have been hospitalised so far. There have been difficulties in reaching the injured.
The clashes are the worst ethnic violence to hit southern Kyrgyzstan since 1990, when several hundred people were killed. Kyrgyzstan was then part of the Soviet Union, which sent in troops to quell the unrest. Russia is reported to be considering a request for help from the interim government, but since Russia is unwilling to act alone. Moscow is hosting a meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO), a grouping of former Soviet states, on Monday to discuss what it can do to end the violence. Interim government has declared and expanded the state of emergency so as to cover the Jalalabad as well and facilitated the passage of civilians and most vulnerable people ( children, women, elder, disabled vs.) who are willing to cross Uzbekistan. Also a bumper zone for 75.000 people at the Uzbek side of the Kyrgyz – Uzbek border has been established.
The interim government of Kyrgyzstan has called for international humanitarian assistance to respond the needs (such as food, health, shelter and hygiene) of the Uzbek people fleeing from the looting and unrest which have been taking place in the places where they used to live.
Turkish Red Crescent Intervention: Upon receiving this information Turkish Red Crescent Society has alerted relevant bodies and a Crisis Desk was established in its Disaster Operation Center (DOC) to address the needs of the people affected by the recent clashes in Kyrgyzstan effectively.
Based on the conversations with the Disaster Management Coordinator of Red Crescent Society of Kyrgyzstan the most needed materials were decided as; food, medicine and medical supplies, blankets and hygienic materials. The Coordinator also pointed that the clashes are focused on Osh and Jalalabad, security concerns were hampering the humanitarian activities, need assessments are ongoing in the said regions and the humanitarian assistance coming from abroad should be directed to Osh airport instead of capital Bishkek
By taking into consideration Turkish Red Crescent has made a decision to send out an humanitarian relief delegate together with an Antonov-12 Cargo plane with a capacity of 15 tons and loaded with food, medicine and medical supplies and the plane has arrived on the date of 15th June of 2010 to Osh at 15:00 local time. The mentioned humanitarian relief supplies comprises 480 food boxes, 109 boxes medical supplies, 300 kitchen sets and 500 blankets and to be distributed to affectees in close cooperation with Kyrgyzstan Red Crescent officials within Regional Cooperation Programme. Second airlift efforts are underway and in this consignment mainly camp materials are to be transported.
